It all started with a vision of water flooding the streets.

Back in February 2019, I took a photography course to learn the art of developing and enlarging.

A group exhibition was due later in March, the topic being Lisbon, and I was searching for an angle, avoiding cliches.

As things often come together, the vision, followed by a conversation with a stranger about Lisbon’s water tunnels, brought me to discover the Reservatório da Mae d’Água and the Aqueduto das Aguas Livres.

In the darkroom, working on the two rolls shot in these locations, that vision of water came back: water as a metaphor for creative force.

A story about meeting our daemon, that part of us that fuels creative work through inspiration. At the same time, the images tell the story of the city of Lisbon through the places that were once central to life, now distant memories, reflections in a dark pool.

I wanted to give this work a material form, bringing words and images together for a more intimate reading.
